One of the standout tracks from Shock Values is lead single Give It To Me - the song that sees Timbaland hooking up with familiar pals Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado. After scoring several massive hits for both of them last year (like SexyBack and Maneater), it's now Timba's turn to churn out another dizzying track for himself.

Give It To Me is exactly why Timbaland is often referred to as one of the world's leading and most creative producers. Laying down an instant pop classic, he retains those massive, distinctive beats he's become so known for, throws in some wiry synth action and a perfect melody, then gets the two singers to add a slick commercial shine and the whole thing sounds incredible.

The only imperfection being Timba's own rap verse, proving again he should stick to where his talents truly lie; behind the studio desk. If the inclusion of the pop-friendly vocalists put you off, then track down the single for the instrumental. The beat is one of the best yet to come from a man who has countless classics behind him.

The Bottom Line

Justin Timberlake may indeed score one of the bigger pop hits of summer 2007 with this song, but it is a significant comedown from the 3 consecutive #1 hits off FutureSex / LoveSounds. If you've missed that more simplistic boy band sound JT left behind several years back, "Summer Love" might ring a few bells. You can almost imagine the ghosts of *NSYNC dancing in the background.

Guide Review - Justin Timberlake - Summer Love

It's always a disappointing experience when an artist as talented as Justin Timberlake segues on pop radio from a song as sophisticated in sound as "What Goes Around..." to something as simplistic and ultimately disappointing as "Summer Love." The song is catchy and inoffensive, but we've come to expect much more from Mr. Timberlake after his string of 3 powerful #1 hit singles.

That big fat synth melody line that dominates the song instantly takes us back to the '90's. Built for synchronized dance moves, the song conjures up memories of JT with his *NSYNC buddies. Unfortunately, this song, with its weak lyrical attempt at blending street cred with summer swoon, wouldn't have been among their best either.

If you haven't picked it up yet, don't let "Summer Love" deter you from digging deeper into the album FutureSex / LoveSounds out of a mistaken assumption that the 3 previous hits are the best the collection has to offer. This could be the last single, but there are pleasures to be found to add to your personal playlist. "Summer Love" just isn't one of them.

"LoveStoned" Is The 4th Single From "Justin Timberlake's" Number #1 Album "FutureSex/LoveSounds".

I have been a fan of this song since the first spin of Justin's album, it's a great summer tune, with it's fresh beats & up tempo sound. However, the video, is less than great, it seems unimaginative & a little boring, after the last 3 videos behind absolutely on-point I did expect more of Justin's people.

Is Justin Timberlake bringing sexy back, or is he just gay? All signs point to the latter.

If there's a trend in pop music in 2006, it's questionably talented singers attempting to make a comeback and falling flat on their faces, which is great fun to watch. For example, it was once thought by some that Beyonce from Destiny's Child was a great songwriter. If that's the case, then how do you explain the blue stillborn corpse that is "Deja Vu?"

Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado have fared better by teaming with once-prominent hip-hop producers and obviously sticking to pretty dang strenuous workout regimens. For example, peep this Nelly Furtado MySpace page. That bitch is smokin! I'm tempted to pick up the album, and I don't even listen to any music with singing in it unless it's country.

Justin Timberlake worked with a gang of hip-hop producers on his 2002 solo debut Justified to mostly middling effect. Pharrell Williams succeeded to a certain degree in making him sound like a bootleg Jacko, and "Cry Me a River" even got a few spins on black stations though. You'd think it wouldn't be too difficult to repeat this level of "success."

Timberlake can't sing anyway, so if there's an issue, it's this shit sandwich of a track Timbaland put together, not to mention his constant ad-libbing. Why has Timbaland decided to become so visual in his artists' music at this point in his career? Is it because Missy Elliott got him on the Zone diet? Next thing you know, he'll be dancing around shirtless in people's videos.

If you notice, this doesn't sound very much like "Promiscuous" or any number of other Timbaland tracks, which would lead me to believe that Timbaland is putting together an Aftermath-style team of ghost producers. That shit might work if you're Dr. Dre and you were never actually making any beats in the first place (it's true), but Timbaland already has a well-recognized sound.

All of Timbaland's best r&b beats-- Ginuwine's "Pony", Destiny's Child's "Get on the Bus", various Aaliyah hits-- are based on his revolutionary decision to make slow jams 300 bpm, in the process creating songs that can turn a party into a dance encyclopedia, slow grinds next to jittery popping. With that foundation Timbaland can do anything he wants. "Cry Me A River" was the last song where he did all the right things: swelling synths, bubbling keys, Justin's Doug E. Fresh beatbox, Tim's own peculiar vocal adlibs buried twenty layers deep, etc. That it coincided perfectly with the teen dream breakup of all time was the kind of dumb luck that makes these songs timeless. Since then, Timbaland's had a bit of a relative slump ("Promiscuous Girl" aside), while Justin's been trying to grow a beard and canoodle with Cammy Cam.

They both return to form on "My Love", the answer to "Cry Me A River" in every way. Justin's come out victorious and in love in 2006, and packs his full nerd-lothario persona into his falsetto, practically weeping lyrics like, "What's the point of waiting anymore?/ 'Cuz girl I've never been more sure [That baby it's you]." When it comes to gruesomely awesome displays of emotion for famous girls, Justin Timberlake is Shakespeare, and this, I guess, is how he proposes to Ms. Diaz.

But "My Love" ain't shit without the absolute mania of this beat. We've all been dying for the return of the weird science fiction of Timbaland, and he brings it all back: massive transformer synth, rumbling bass hits, that damn JT clickity-shushing beatbox, an operatic wailer over the chorus, and what sounds like a Tourettic Porky Pig spitting percussion. Of course, it's not Tim if he's not mumbling something vaguely sexy the whole time, so that's here, as well. And, as if he knew his own woeful raps wouldn't cut it this time, Tim brings in T.I. for some Cyrano shit. The verse is boilerplate guest spot, "stand-up guy" and whatnot, but it's the ideal chillaxing of Timberlake's pussywhipped whimpering.

It's not perfect-- misery is always better than bliss-- but it's as good as these two get.
