The Plain White T’s are quickly becoming one of the more popular bands in the pop-rock genre. With their last album, All That We Needed, quickly gaining the interest of many teenagers, the Plain White T’s are on their way to being the “next big thing.” So, to satisfy hungry fans before their next full-length album, the Chicago quintet will be releasing a new EP, titled Hey There Delilah, named after one of their more popular songs from the last album. Produced by Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Motion City Soundtrack), Delilah features a new version and a live version of “Hey There Delilah, and 4 new songs waiting to capture the ears of pop fans everywhere.

The EP opens with a new version of “Hey There Delilah,” which has an addition of strings that fit nicely in the track, and is definitely the highlight of the entire EP. The next song is the foot-stomping “Easy Way Out,” which features driving guitars and a few handclaps. “Down The Road” is a peppy song which features some fine drumming and also has the best chorus out of all the new tracks on the EP, while “Losing Myself” is a mid-paced track that grooves smoothly from verse to verse. “If I Told You” has a redundant chorus that is redeemed by catchy verses, which slightly reminds me of pop music from the late 60’s and early 70’s. The EP closes with a live recording of “Hey There Delilah,” which is all fine and dandy until the throngs of teenage girls take over the song with their shouting of the chorus. This ruins the final song for me and quickly becomes obnoxious after one listen to it. I rather hear the band instead of the crowd, and this closing live track leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Another problem I have with this EP are the choruses. For the most part, they just repeat one line over and over again, making the song for the most part forgettable. The vocals and music are pretty okay, but nothing we haven’t heard before.

I am not a big fan of the Plain White T’s. Their last album never caught on to me, and this EP did not convert me into a fan, either. While I do enjoy a few tracks (“Hey There Delilah” and “Down The Road”), this EP isn’t going to change your mind about the band, if you’re not a fan. But, if you are a fan of the Plain White T’s, then you’ll eat this EP up and love it a lot. In conclusion, Hey There Delilah has its moments, but it’s just not for me, and I would only recommend it to pop-rock fans.

THE two things that 'Baby's Coming Back' really highlights is the strength in Danny Jones' voice and Tom Fletcher's knack for writing fine pop tunes.

This song really is one of the best things they have done in ages, reminiscent of The Beach Boys meets The Brady Bunch.

Transylvania feels more like a 'pick and mix' - sounding like a piece of musical theatre, influenced by Queen, Meat Loaf and The Monkees. Bizarre but quite brilliant!

With a greatest hits album out soon, this band may soon jump in their De lorean and drive out of teenage girls' lives forever.

This double A-side reminds us all that their music is much so more than Busted's little brothers. Matt Willis would die for material as good as this.

To quote the man himself, no one is interested in his album, they only care about his less-than-savoury bush tucker trial in "I'm A Celebrity...". What could unfortunately become Matt Willis' last solo effort (a shame, as he still has a lot to give) is another decent stadium pop stonker, taken from the soundtrack to the new "Mr Bean" film. I would say go and buy this, but somehow I doubt many will.

The Bottom Line

In predictable fashion, Avril Lavigne follows an uptempo hit with a big power ballad. However, the tone here is different from "Keep Holding On," her moderate hit early in the year from the soundtrack to Eragon. Here the words are classic yearning love song instead of the more general inspirational tone of the earlier hit. Producer Butch Walker puts together a classic pop arrangement that gives the words maximum emotional impact.

  Review - Avril Lavigne - When You're Gone

  Avril Lavigne's biggest hit singles are anything but subtle. "When You're Gone" is a big, yearning pop ballad pulling out all the stops on its words of the pain of separation from a loved one. A moody synth chord drops into a keyboard figure followed by downbeat strummed guitar accompanying Avril's opening vocals. The musical scene is set for an emotionally cathartic singalong.

  Butch Walker is the co-songwriter and producer of "When You're Gone." His creative relationship with Avril Lavigne is an increasingly symbiotic one. She seems to tone down some of his tendencies toward glam theatricality while he brings a rich knowledge of pop and rock convention that often gives their work together the feel of an instant classic. Walker also produced Lavigne's recent contribution of a version of "Imagine" to the John Lennon tribute Instant Karma.

  Avril Lavigne's vocals are a bit of an acquired taste. Some listeners could consider "When You're Gone" a bit thin and, as in the words of Simon Cowell, shrieky. However, she turns the weakness into a strength because it provides a connection with her core fan base of teenage girls. Even though she is 23, her vocals still contain a teenage resonance.

Yeah, I Hate Her Too.

One of the most annoying tracks of recent months has to have been the car crash single "Girlfriend", from Canadian 'mini rocker' "Avril Lavigne". Now a brand new, very surprising remix has emerged, with 'mini Missy Elliott', "Lil Mama".

The first time I heard people talking about Lil Mama, I thought it was cheap, over promoted crap, but the way she spits her lyrics in this track took me by surprise, she seems far more professional than you would expect from a 17 year old.

The track itself, is primarily crap, as you still hear the ridiculously annoying chorus (hey hey, you you), but look past that & listen to Lil Mama rap, & it becomes a very cool track with a girl who I hope is around in years to come.

Isn't it just fantastic to have Editors back? And not just back, but back sounding exactly like they did two years ago, as if all that matters in music is Joy Division infused with a smattering of the kind of piano chords that, when not backed up with Tom Smith's baritone and a fair dose of knowing miserabilism, might give the term epic indie a bad name.

In other words, Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors is a fantastic single. Building to the kind of crashing guitar crescendos they do so well, its clever title and layers of orchestral/industrial keyboards and strings make it a perfect reintroduction to one of the decade's best bands. At 5 minutes long it's worth every second, particularly when the dense harmonies cut in around the 4 minute mark.

And the best thing of all about it? There's a whole album as good as this just around the corner. Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors is just the appetiser for An End Has A Start, an album that is about to deliver everything this promises. A welcome return from a band we don't ever want to go away.

Okay, okay so let's get straight to the point here. This single, 'Jessica', is all about American super babe Jessica Alba.

It's all about her, from her roles in the Fantastic Four and Sin City to the hit television series Dark Angel. All are mentioned here and, lyrically, this isn't exactly what you'd call genious: it's unimaginative and dire.

However musically wise this is a huge step forwards for Elliot Minor. It contains heavier guitar work and shows off the bands to a different audience.

It's got great pace, but it is repetitive and can sound tiredsome after several listens. A decent song, but nothing special.

Yes, it's full of energy, pure punkish bubblegum attitude, and at first a lot of fun. However, it does not take long for the feeling to sink in that Avril Lavigne can, as she sings in the song, "do so much better." The whole feeling is of a 14-year-old Avril turning a cheerleading chant into a bubblegum pop song.
