Kanye vs 50 cent: a manufactured PR Stunt

Kanye vs Curtis
Will it be the bear in the funny glasses or the brooding Curtis James Jackson III?

It's being billed as rap's Blur v Oasis moment: two commercial titans of hip-hop, squaring up to release third albums on the same day. But there is both a lot more, and some deal less, than meets the eye about the fact that both Kanye West and 50 Cent are putting their new LPs out on September 11.

For starters, neither artist is releasing their records when originally planned. Kanye's Graduation had been slated for release much later in the year, then brought forward. 50's album, Curtis, was ready to release in early summer, then abruptly delayed to mid-September.

Of course, the pair of them have had words over the years, Fiddy offering backhanded compliments while Kanye sang his contemporary's praises. But both men were really only doing what their audience expects - bravado from one countered with humility from the other. It's no surprise to see which one of them is currently stoking the fires, but this should not be seen as evidence of real animosity (notwithstanding 50's one substantive dig at Kanye). While 50's chest-beating is typical, he has much to prove: his commercial star has dipped since his last LP, and it seems clear that doubts over how successfully Curtis was being promoted played a significant part in the decision to delay the release. Kanye may be more confident, but his new record marks a major sonic departure and may not be as enthusiastically received as his previous LPs.

These, though, are not the only reasons why viewing hip-hop in this reductive "battle of the bands" way is a futile exercise. Rap is fiercely competitive as part of its nature - many artists earned their stripes in the rite of the rap battle, a one-on-one onstage contest where the rapper with the cutest insults and the better quips wins. People steeped in such pugilistic tradition hardly need to demonstrate their prowess against their peers in the aisles of record shops: this really only shows which of them has the more effective marketing campaign, not who has the sharper rhymes or the better beats.

The clearest commentary on this manufactured spat has come, not unsurprisingly, from Jay-Z. The rapper and Def Jam records boss will have been intimately involved in decisions over scheduling Kanye's LP, and his view - that the publicity can only help both artists - is typically shrewd. Rap has suffered from illegal downloading and bootlegging much more than many other genres: if a few hackneyed PR strategies and a whiff of controversy get some extra customers out to buy either or both albums in September, then the industry will be able to congratulate itself on another myth manufactured, another profit margin maintained. There will be no losers in this "battle".

Riding high after the success of one of its most popular offerings ever – communicator HTC P3300 (Artemis) – HTC had no other way to go but capitalize on this concept once again. And they did so – they figured that utilizing at least the same platform and casing would work out just fine. First, this allowed them to save some money (typical, time-proven platform – the OMAP 850), and second – lend the new product the distinctive looks right from the get-go (the popularity of the P3300 plays a crucial role in this).

You will know the interface at once, for it is similar to other Sony Ericsson models. The main menu pops up before you as a grid consisting of 12 icons. Shortcut number navigation is on the K850i’s spec sheet as well – you can bind shortcuts to most menu items, that the handset comes pre-installed with, as well as own applications and files. Apple iPhone SIM unlocked for UK carriers

iPhone SIM unlock hackDon’t get your hopes up yet, folks. We still don’t have a software-only complete unlock solution to free our iPhone from the evil grip of AT&T, but we do have workaround. Hackers in Europe have devised a method to forge a blank SIM card with a SIM reader/writer to fool the iPhone into working on a non-AT&T network. The hack enables incoming and outgoing call and SMS text features.

Getting your iPhone to work on any network is as simple (or as complicated, depending on how you look at it) as grabbing your Infinity USB Unlimited SIM reader/writer ($88 + shipping) and a blank SIM card ($8.27+shipping).

A Hackintosh forum member has already tested the hack and reports success:

Just tested it - works fine with Orange UK - Call In/Out, SMS In/Out. Great job to everyone who made this possible (specially to the guy that edited the Hex file).

I used the subscriber ICCID, so maybe is best to edit the tutorial - activation should
be the last step.

My thoughts on safety of using this: If so called ‘Total Unlock’ is released, it will be
probably patching of the baseband firmware to do a similar thing. So no worry about
alerting the network, the trick seems to fool only the good/bad guy check in the
baseband firmware.

Find the SIM hack tutorial here. And, as always, proceed at your own risk. Your subscriber may shut down your account in violation of your TOS. But, hey, having an iPhone on your non-AT&T network might be worth it. Right?

Orange SPV E650/HTC S710/ HTC Vox/Vodafone v1415 Review::Things to consider Pros and Cons

So, the Orange SPV E650. Just an Orange version of the HTC S710, surely? Well, yes and no. Firstly, the keyboard is a different colour, we have the obligatory Orange logo and there's a distinct lack of Windows Live (no MSN Messenger fun here kids). Whilst Windows Live may have vanished, something rather painful has popped up instead, but we'll get to this in a minute.

First, let's have a look at this delicious device. There's a vivid screen which is clear, crisp and close to the casing. People may look at this phone as you sit in a local restaurant and think, "Yeah, it's ok." Rarely, though, will you find these same people ignoring it when the QWERTY keyboard pops out.

HTC Mogul for Sprint Review::Things to consider Pros and Cons

The HTC Mogul for Sprint is the latest in a long line of Pocket PC powered device with slide-out keyboards from Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, and the replacement device for the discontinued Sprint PPC-6700. The Mogul also happens to be the first HTC branded device to be offered by any of the US mobile networks, who typically rebrand HTC's devices with their own names. The HTC Mogul jams a lot of features into a package that won't put off most road warriors, even if it might be a bit large for the typical consumer. With features like WiFi, EV-DO 3G data, and a 2 megapixel camera, the Mogul is a solid addition to Sprint's business handset lineup.

Motorola RIZR Z8 Review::Things to consider Pros and Cons

Here Let's Have a close look at Motorola RIZR Z8's Design, Hardware and UI first:

Introduction

The Motorola RIZR Z8, termed the ‘multimedia monster’ by Ed Zander (CEO of Motorola), is one of this year's stand out handsets. The Z8 is an intriguing mix of high style and high tech, marrying good, though not top end, specifications with a stand-out design.

Running on UIQ 3.1 on top of Symbian 9.2, it has a state of the art smartphone software platform and is the first ever non-touchscreen UIQ phone. However, this is only part of its appeal, since in its positioning and marketing the Z8 moves away from the traditional smartphone offering and instead attempts to create a compelling, consumer focused, multimedia experience, led by stellar video features.

LG's MUZIQ for Sprint::Things to consider Pros and Cons

The LG MUZIQ, also known as the LX570, is a recent addition to Sprint's music phone lineup. Like LG's successful FUSIC, the MUZIQ combines a music player and a mobile phone all into one. Specifications for the MUZIQ boast audio features such as Bluetooth stereo, an FM transmitter, background music playback, and dedicated external music keys. With an array of dedicated music features under its hood (and on top), LG and Sprint are hoping to attract the attention to mobile audiophiles.
Giving up the pasty white complexion of the old housing on the FUSIC, the LG MUZIQ sports a new glossy black exterior. Less is more in this case.....................................

RIM BlackBerry Curve 8300 review::Things to consider Pros and Cons

With the introduction of the BlackBerry Pearl 8100, RIM launched itself beyond its business roots and into the mainstream consumer market. The Pearl was a great first effort, and it sold very well. Now RIM is trying to apply the same treatment to its bread and butter crop of QWERTY smartphones. The 8800, which we recently reviewed, was a mostly aesthetic update to the lineup, but the new Curve 8300 is the real thing. It can compete head to head on features with most consumer oriented smartphones, all the while offering the full BlackBerry Push Email experience.
