K elly’s album is set to be one of the most interesting of the year. She’s defied her record company and shunned the Since U Been Gone hitmakers (who’ve since worked with Pink and Avril) to steer her own sound. This first single mixes Pat Benatar-style 1980s pop/rock with Alanis-style angst (the lyrics are a dumbed-down You Oughta Know). It’s low on hooks and melodies; the previously unheard sound of an Idol risking it all in the name of not compromising.

SKYBOMBERS
The retro wheel continues to turn down south with these Melbourne rockers the buzz du jour in LA and their hometown, having just signed to seminal label Alberts here (home of AC/DC, Beasts Of Bourbon, Dallas Crane). The debut EP opens with lead track, It Goes Off, which has been scoring US radio airplay and reveals a strong melodic sense with classic rock riffs. The production is pretty muddy but you get the general idea that these guys have a few strong tunes.

So who is this Robyn chick?

Robyn may be a new name on the charts, but in fact she's been a huge pop star in her home country of Sweden for years!

She was discovered at the age of 12 and recorded her first album at 16. It proved to be a huge hit, and some of her songs made the UK top 40. She even became a UNICEF (United Nation's International Children's Fund) ambassador in the late 90's.

Recently she set up her own record label, Konichiwa, and has been writing songs for fellow Swedish artists. One of her songs was covered by UK R'n'B artist Beverley Knight.

With Every Heartbeat, a collaboration with Andreas Kleerup, is her latest single and it shot into our top five on downloads alone!

So what does it sound like?

A song about breaking up with your loved one and the sadness that comes with that, this is a very mellow sounding, subdued pop record. Robyn's voice is incredibly sweet and sugary, and the electronic beats and bleeps recall some of Kylie Minogue's more danceable hits.

Will you still be humming it next week?

Yes, but mostly because of the fact that she repeats the same lyrics over and over and over and over again, than it being a memorable song in general. As with most dance tunes, the song doesn't really go anywhere which is a real shame. It sounds the same all the way through.

Will it make the charts?

It'll be all over the radio for the rest of the summer, no doubt about it.

I’m not sure what I even want from the White Stripes anymore. Their just released single “Icky Thump,” for all of its urgency, was kind of a mess. Now, we get wind of this newly leaked track and though it’s certainly more focused, it still seems vaguely underwhelming. The kids can’t win.

At the onset Jack White mixes it up, simultaneously pursuing his usual Zeppelin crunch as well as the more laid back groove of that band’s “Hey Hey What Can I Do?” But Jack’s pedantic lecturing fails to approximate the humid sexuality of the best British rockers gone South. I’m struggling through the usual Dixie touch points to find an appropriate comparison, because I know this reminds me of something specific. I’m genuinely concerned that it might be a half-remembered Black Crowes song still lingering in my skull from a radio transmission I once heard in high school.

OOOOOOOH! I predict more anthemic, guitar-driven pop from those lovable likely lads, the Kaiser Chiefs.

Unfortunately, the trouble with Ricky Wilson is that the louder he shouts the less he seems to say.

The Angry Mob is everything you would expect from the Kaisers. Crunchy guitar playing the root notes? Check. Honky tonk piano being banged away in the background? Check. Po-faced Wilson reciting more working-classisms than you could shake a tabloid at? Check.

Two minutes through, the song shifts into one of those chanting crescendos for which the band is famed - a single verse repeated so many times that the football hooligans who will no doubt end up screaming it won’t need a second listen to commit it to memory.

The Pigeon Detectives "Take Her Back" Rapidshare Music Video&Lyrics

A recognised metal-head friend of mine – who shall remain nameless to preserve his reputation – recently asked me for contact details for The Pigeon Detectives’ PR company. He’d suddenly been taken by their debut album, Wait For Me, unexpectedly; defences weakened by daytime exposure to mainstream radio, the Yorkshire quartet’s jaunty melodies overran him. I felt sympathy, initially; but, after a few cursory listens to ‘Take Her Back’, I understand my friend’s condition. There is something mercilessly devastating about this band’s assault on your twitchy toes.

Yeah, it sounds like it fell off an itchy-indie-pop production line; yeah, the accents are as broad as the appeal of the peers The Pigeon Detectives hope to emulate commercially; and yeah, the lyrics are matter-of-fact nonsense, designed with the sole intention of having them absolutely hollered back at the band at bigger and bigger venues around the country and beyond. But despite all its clichés there’s no doubting the quality of ‘Take Her Back’’s assembly – it’s destined to fulfil its mission, to infect the easily pleased like Spanish flu and take a few more discerning souls with it for ballast, just for the fun of it.

Conclusion: it’s shit, really, but in a good way; a way that can be respected and appreciated on a level beneath personal tastes. Me, I’ll be tossing this disc as far away from me as possible once the next full stop’s tapped into place, but my mate? Well, he’s in for the long-term I fear, and I’m going to try my very best to avoid being dragged down with him.
