As Fantasia's 'When I See U' continues to dominate the Billboard R&B chart, a (proper) remix of the song has surfaced. Featuring producer Polow Da Don and Young Jeezy, this version of the track differs quite a bit to the original. Don't be fooled by the faux-original start; when the remix beat kicks in it sounds like a totally different song - despite the same vocals being used. After a couple of listens, I'm liking this one.

Kelly Rowland's video for her new single 'Ghetto' has been premiered on BET's Access Granted. The video that also features guest singer Snoop Dogg was shot by Andrew Gura in early August.

The song which is the second single from Rowland's 'Ms. Kelly' was co-written and produced by Tank. After its release on August 7, it has so far peaked at #109 in Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Meanwhile, it was reported that 'Ms. Kelly' will be re-released in fall after being 'polished' again in the studio. There will be several new tracks to anticipate the moderate sale. After several delays, the album was first released on July 3 and debuted at #6 in Billboard Hot 200 list, selling 83,746 units.

Better still, between the bits of fire and Annie wailing in the backseat of a cab, it's vaguely patriotic: black-and-white shots of 'real' looking people, a fluttering American flag, and, uhh, Annie on a park bench in a superhero uniform? It's like the visual depiction of the pledge of allegiance, set to Glen Ballard balladry! Watch it at Amazon and imagine how ruptured the cabbie's ears would be if Annie was actually singing during the shoot.

"Save Room" is beautiful but empty. The song’s sweet-though-restrained melodies reaffirm Legend’s love for stately production. Critics oftentimes compare Legend to a young Stevie Wonder, but it’s also obvious on "Save Room" that the Chicago singer/songwriter listened to his fair share of Burt Bacharach. While the song is gorgeous, there’s a certain distance between the lyrics and Legend’s tepid, crooning delivery, and that detachment spells trouble.

"Stereo" is the fourth single off John Legend's current album, Once Again. Typing the previous sentence just made your Guide happy for a couple of reasons: first, because it means that Legend's label still believes in the album enough to keep putting out singles, even though the album hasn't sold as well as expected. Second, because the label (Sony/Columbia) is still willing to spend money on videos for the album, which means they not only believe in the album, but in John Legend himself. If you haven't heard Once Again, it's one of the better R&B releases of the past year and "Stereo" is one of its best songs. Enjoy the video.

John Legend's 3 Grammy awards are enough to show that 2006 was most definitely his year, and not wanting to rest on his laurels his second album Once Again stormed into the top ten. With tracks like P.D.A it isn't difficult to see that there's a lot of substance behind the hype.

With a soulful and jazzy accompaniment to the cheerful R&B beat Legend's vocals beam out with an old school controlled authority. There's more than a touch of Marvin Gaye to his sound, but sadly P.D.A's message should come with a health warning. Encouraging public displays of affection should be a criminal offence.

As if we need any more stomach curling products flying around at this time of year. It's a shame then that you'll be forced to buy P.D.A because of its infectious jolliness.

My first impression of this was that it might be a cash in on the Gnarls Berkley phenomenon, as the vocals are very similar and the dance background is also similar…as a first impression.

Once the track become more established, and certainly after a few plays, I could hear a more 70’s disco and 60’s soul influence, that works well as a modern dance track and given a 21st century electronic sparkle, the backing track really stands out as catchy and very danceable. The vocals, well, yes they do sound similar to Gnarls Berkley, but I can’t deny that they work very well, with simple and catchy lyrics that stand up with some of the best in 60’s and 70’s soul and funk. There were no real b-sides to speak of, as track 2 was an original mix of the lead track (a radio edit) and track 3 was an instrumental, but that really appealed to me, as I could really pick up on the choppy funk guitar and even an 80’s sounding synth. Overall, this is a very good single and one that appeals to my tastes.

The Bottom Line

Despite the somewhat lifeless Stargate production, Elliott Yamin's first post-American Idol hit single goes down with mellow smoothness. Unlike 2006's victor Taylor Hicks, Yamin sounds completely contemporary sliding nicely into today's pop radio playlists. It's a great start for Elliott.

Guide Review - Elliott Yamin - Wait for You

Elliott Yamin fans got an initial false alarm with the promo release of the song "Movin' On." Although "Movin' On" is a solid performance, "Wait for You" was wisely selected to take the earlier song's place as the official first single release from the album Elliott Yamin. The smooth, mellow r&b ballad sound is a perfect fit with other contemporary pop hits.

Stargate, the producers of "Wait for You," are among the hottest in the music business. They are responsible for such recent smashes as Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," Rihanna's "Unfaithful," and Ne-Yo's "So Sick." Unfortunately, in their slickly professional hands, Elliott Yamin's vocals sound a bit mass-produced. This lack of distinctiveness could be in part due to Yamin's inexperience. He is still feeling around for a unique sound.

Elliott Yamin, as the true cinderella story of American Idol's 2006 season, is almost universally loved by fans of the show. He has delivered a strong first album to these supporters, and "Wait for You" will be a fine beginning on the pop charts. With more maturity and experience behind him, he may yet be a vocalist worthy of mention in the same breath with his personal idol Donny Hathaway.

Will someone please give Mutya Buena a prod from me, and remind her that’s she’s a popstar? On every track she’s been involved with since her departure from Sugababes, the mother-of-one has done a fine job of filling her vocals with all the joyousness of discovering your favourite pet eaten by a rogue Alsatian upon arriving home from a really bad day at the office. ‘Song 4 Mutya’ finds her phoning in her lines without a shred of emotion, while coffee-table / cocktail-party dull-dance duo Groove Armada make with the pretty beats and pieces. You’d have thought, what with that title, she’d make an effort at sounding happy at having such a wonderful career right now.

Buena has great songs in her – you can feel it, more and more, with each so-so offering she unleashes unto the charts. Groove Armada? Well, they’re washed up, aren’t they? ‘Song 4 Mutya’ is a long way, compositionally, from their high watermark of the sumptuous ‘At The River’, now ten years in the past. Their time’s gone – see ya! – but Buena can build on this; she can become just as special a pop act as the band she left behind continue to be, albeit increasingly erratically.

If only she’d smile a little at her situation – like she does in the video below, however falsely – and embrace her potential with open arms rather than a coy reservation.
