Gym Class Heroes – Clothes Off (Decaydance)

FOLLOWING on from their success with ‘Cupid’s Chokehold (Breakfast in America)', Gym Class Heroes now revamp yet another well known past master to devastating effect, and it’s actually quite good.

It’s refreshing to come across rap r'n'b without the lyrics and aim of the song being sprung around drive-bys and pimps, instead opting for a more mellow approach, the like of which Soul 2 Soul used to impress us with.

They are rightly recognised as pioneers of the hip hop scene, breathing new life into a deflating genre, and turning bygone tunes into chart toppers. Complete with warm bass lines and an infectious lyrical loop that is ‘We don’t have to take our clothes off to have a good time’.

Set to be plastered all over mediocre music video TV as well as mainstream radio, Gym Class Heroes have really found a niche in the market, and they plan to fill that void, along with any other void that may come around.

Released on August 20

Cupid's Chokehold is so much more clever than most R 'n' B/alternative hip-hop. It's written from the perspective of a character who is naively smitten with his new girlfriend, the lyrics being sweet, singable and somewhat humourous.

'If I had to choose between her and the sun/ then I'd be one nocturnal son of a gun' is a great example.

The song kicks off with the 'ba ba da da' motif found throughout, before launching into laid back verses and catchy choruses.

It's the kind of song that'll make you smile, and is a refreshing change from the bland same-y music usually found within the genre.

A quirky, summery soundtrack to brighter weather, Cupid's Chokehold is welcome on my radio any time.
