The Bottom Line

"D'Yer Mak'er" has always been one of those Led Zeppelin songs that would make casual rock fans sit up and say "Really, that's Led Zeppelin?" The pseudo reggae style of the song just seems too light to fit the heavy rock image of the group. Consequently, some Zep fans have always looked at the song with disdain. Now, 24 years after its first release on the album Houses of the Holy, rising teen star Sean Kingston puts the "D'Yer Mak'er" hook in possibly its proper place, as the irresistible hook for a sunny reggae-pop song.
Pros

* Brilliant use of hook from Led Zeppelin classic "D'Yer Mak'er"
* Sunny end to summer 2007

Cons

* No obvious problems here

Description

* Kicks off with the irresistible hook
* Sunsplashed light reggae backing
* Lyrics lamenting a love lost

Guide Review - Sean Kingston - Me Love

For those who are old enough to have been rock fans in the early 1970's, the opening hook for Sean Kingston's second smash hit single will be instantly familiar. It is also the hook for the top 20 US pop hit single "D'Yer Mak'er" by the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin. If you are among those fans who have always been confused by the song's title, it is intended to be pronounced with a British accent as "Jah-may-kah," perfect for the song's faux reggae approach.

The use of "D'Yer Mak'er" in "Me Love" is possibly even more irresistible to a pop fan's ears than the use of "Stand By Me" as backing for "Beautiful Girls." The song is a lament for a lover leaving, but the poppy reggae beat is so sunny, that it's impossible to be brought down by Sean Kingston's feelings of "drowning in the ocean." This music was made for enjoying those last steamy August days of summer at the beach or by the pool.

With this instant hit, Sean Kingston is making a strong bid for being the hottest new artist of 2007. He initially attempted to make an impact performing from the dark side of rap. However, his true nature seems to be as a pop-reggae romantic smiling even as he's done wrong by another would-be girlfriend.
